Travelers planning a trip to Malaysia during the upcoming June school holidays and Vesak should anticipate longer waiting times, as highlighted by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on May 20.
“ICA expects very heavy traffic at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints in the lead-up to and during the entire holiday period from Tuesday, May 21 to Sunday, June 2,” was stated by a recent press release by the authority.
Each year, as the school holidays approach, travelers between Singapore and Malaysia face a recurring dilemma: the daunting prospect of heavy traffic at the Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints.
Since SG to Malaysia can be easily covered by bus, it is easily the best spot for holiday travels. Singapore to Kuala Lumpur being the most popular route can be covered in just around 5-6 hours via popular operators like Firstcoach, KKKL Express and Transtar Travel and others.
Points to Note when Crossing Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints Ahead of Vesak and School Holidays
Travelers, be prepared for delays! The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has ramped up security measures at checkpoints following a recent attack in Johor Bahru. This means stricter checks and potentially longer waiting times.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Expect Delays: Increased security checks will likely cause delays, especially during peak hours. Factor in extra time for immigration clearance to avoid missing your bus or travel plans.
- Stay Updated: Check traffic conditions with LTA’s One Motoring website, ICA’s social media, or local radio before your trip. This will help you plan your departure time accordingly.
- Travel Smart:
- Use QR codes for faster immigration clearance (if traveling by car).
- Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity. Update any Re-Entry Permits and inform ICA of passport changes (for Singapore PRs and Long-Term Pass holders). Read more on Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia.
- Submit the SG Arrival Card with health declaration via the MyICA app within 3 days before arrival (if you’re a short-term visitor).
- Drivers of foreign vehicles without a valid Autopass card, the VEP approval e-mail from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), or valid insurance will be denied entry.
- ICA reminds drivers of foreign vehicles to settle any outstanding fines they may have, as failure to do so could result in denial of entry into Singapore.
- Payment of fines can be made online via AXS kiosks, the AXS website, the AXS mobile app, PayNow, and the relevant agenciesโ e-services websites. Offline options include visiting the relevant agenciesโ customer service counters or SingPost outlets.
